Port of Rab Opens for Safer, Easier Mooring

Rab Port reconstruction and renovatoin completed

Rab Port revamped: New mooring lines and utilities for boaters

Since last summer, construction workers have completed all projects at the Port of Rab. The port is now fully protected, and the extensively reconstructed waterfront offers improved facilities for sailors. As one of Croatia’s busiest and most important island ports, the Port of Rab boasts one of the longest waterfronts in the Adriatic.

The reconstruction and renovation of Rab’s coastline took three years, making it the largest investment cycle in the island city’s port infrastructure history. The project cost €4.96 million, with €4.85 million coming from non-refundable funds. The European Union co-financed the initiative under the Operational Programme Competitiveness and Cohesion through the European Regional Development Fund.

Rab port upgraded: Raised, reinforced, and ready for boaters

The first phase of the project began with the construction of a fishing port and the Pumpurela pier, followed by a comprehensive reconstruction and rehabilitation of Obala Petra Krešimira in the main city port. This phase was particularly significant, as the Rab waterfront had sunk.

Standing only 30 to 40 centimeters above sea level and exposed to southern winds, the waterfront frequently flooded and deteriorated significantly. In the past, boaters moored their boats side-on to the Rab waterfront, which proved to be a poor solution, especially during strong southerly winds.

The Rab waterfront has now been completely reconstructed and elevated. Mooring lines and utility pedestals for electricity and water have been installed. This space can now accommodate 10 to 15 boats moored stern-to along the shore. Officials inaugurated the reconstructed waterfront just before the parliamentary elections.

This upgrade marks a significant development for the entire Island of Rab, which has long struggled with a shortage of berths. The nearby ACI marina is small and overcrowded, and the island simply lacks enough mooring spots for all boaters. As expected, this becomes a burning issue during the summer season.

Breakwater completed and safety of Rab port Enhanced

Workers have completed construction on the small secondary breakwater at the Port of Rab. The breakwater now fully encloses the inner part of the port, protecting the Rab waterfront from southerly winds. The project began three years ago. The concrete blocks supporting the breakwater were subjected to heavy loads until they fully settled on solid ground.

A reinforced concrete structure was then placed on top of them. The project’s goal was to enhance safety in the Port of Rab and enable safer docking for high-speed ferry and other ferry lines. By elevating the waterfront, the historic core of Rab has been protected from flooding.

The completion of the Rab waterfront reconstruction is certainly good news. Especially for boaters who can now properly moor their boats and have access to electricity and water.
