Dalmatia is the only area within the European Union which is not covered with meteorological radar measurements. It is about to change due to METMONIC, the project by DHMZ. The purpose of the project is the modernisation of the national weather observation network on the territory of the Republic of Croatia and it has, among other things, provided the European funds for the purchase of new meteorological radars three of which will be located on the Adriatic. First radars will be installed in autumn next year near Sukošan and in Istria, while the third one intended for the Pelješac penninsula will be installed in spring 2021. New radars will be particularly useful to seafarers because they are most reliable instruments for accurate weather assessment. For the METMONIC project, the new generation of meteorological radars will be installed, dual polarized Doppler radars which will, apart from showing the amount of cloud cover, precipitation expectancy, anticipated quantity, wind speed and direction in the atmosphere, accumulated total precipitation also show other useful data.
For local people it will mean early-warning of hazardous weather and for the people at sea, radar data will be valuable in order to assess whether to change the course or stay at berth. The data obtained from the radars will be included into the forecast models and thus ensure an accurate weather forecast.
